Durvasana is a hatha yoga pose and has to be done standing on one leg. For this, it is necessary that you have practiced well. A small mistake can prove fatal for you. Before doing Durvasana, you should have mastered other yogasanas or yoga poses, otherwise, problems may arise.
It is believed that
it is named after Rishi Durvasa. Very little information is available about
this. According to a myth, it is described in the eighteenth verse of
Hathbhayasapaddhi, written in the eighteenth century. It is described in it as
Trivikramasana which literally means that you put one leg on your neck and
stand up.
This posture is
described as Trivikramasana in the nineteenth century Sritattvanidhi, but today
it is known as Durvasana. It is not possible for everyone to do this asana.
That is why it is very important that you do other asanas first and only when
you become proficient in yoga, try it under the supervision of an invigilator.
How and why to do
Durvasana:
It makes the spine
and body of your body very strong and helps in maintaining its balance. If you
are sure about your health, then only do it under the supervision of an expert.
There should be no mistake in this or else the results can be very bad.
How to do
Durvasana step by step:
Bring your body to that position:
Take your hands up
and then bring the hands to the ground. During this, spread your fingers and
now come to the plank position, which is also called Chaturanga Dandasana.
After staying in this position for some time, you come in the posture of
upward-facing breathing so that you can do further postures.
Come
into the downward-facing breathing posture:
Bring yourself to the
position of Adho Mukha Svanasana and now stabilize yourself. This is the
posture after which you have to infuse power inside your body because now you
are going to do Chakorasana. This asana will make your health fit. Now you can
come to Skandasana.
Skandasana
to Durvasana:
Now balance yourself
on one leg and usually try with the right foot. If this is not possible for
some reason, then use the left leg and take it behind the neck. After coming in
this posture, your hands should be joined for worship and you can come to your
normal state after staying in this position for some time by repeating the
process mentioned above.
Precautions to be taken
while doing Durvasana Or Advanced Standing Balancing Pose:
Many people will be
able to attempt some expression of Durvasana, even if they aren’t able to do
the full pose, as long as they focus on their body condition and don’t push
beyond their limits.
If you have issues
like pain or any injury in your neck, hip, or back, consider this with your
doctor first before attempting this pose. Do not try to attempt or do such kind
of pose or extend beyond your physical limits. Ensure you are breathing
normally and in a natural flow while doing your practice of such pose. You
should feel at ease both physically and mentally.
Remember that the way
the pose looks to a certain angle is not as important as how it feels. To the
observer, it may look like you’re not going that deep into the pose, but if
you’re going to a comfortable angle sensation in your body, then you’re
receiving benefits in each pose.
